Plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs), typically gold or silver, applied as optical markers for biochemical or biomedical diagnostics, as optical sensors for detection of chemical and biological analytes, imaging of cells and tissues, and detection and treatment of cancer cells. The resonance properties of the metallic nanoparticle are determined by its size, shape, and composition and can be tailored for multiplexing of biological markers by using distinct resonance frequencies simultaneously.
